Questions before you decide
Why people still use Excel alongside your ERP
Using Excel alongside an ERP is not automatically a problem. It becomes a risk when a critical process, control or final record exists only in someone’s spreadsheet.
Where the problem starts
A spreadsheet often fills a gap: unsupported planning, slow data entry, a missing integration or an unhelpful report. Banning Excel before understanding its purpose can make work harder. Parallel records also create opportunities for conflicting versions and missed transactions.
What to check first
- List spreadsheets that complement the ERP and those that duplicate it.
- Trace one process and identify every manual transfer of data.
- Check whether the ERP already supports the function and why it is not used.
- Identify spreadsheets that control costing, invoicing or business decisions.
First step
A decision before a solution
Choose a specific response for each critical spreadsheet: better ERP use, connected data or a focused extension. Keep useful analytical spreadsheets where they serve a clear purpose.
